Historical purification plant Frankfurt

Today's historical sewage purification plant was built between 1883 and 1887 in the Niederrad quarter directly on the Main. At that time, it was the first plant of its kind in Germany. The plant was in operation until 1960.

Permission to include the picture here was given by the Stadtentwaesserung Frankfurt/Main.

Mixing chamber

In the mixing chamber, the chemical part of the plant, sulphate clay and lime were added to the water. The ensuing chemical reaction made the floating substances sink quickly to the bottom of the adjacent sedimentation tank.

Sedimentation tank

The chemically treated sewage was then directed through the intake chamber to the sedimentation tank. A reduction in the speed at which the sewage flowed made the sedimentation process possible and facilitated the sinking of the floating substances to the bottom.

Sand trap

The sewage began its path through the purification plant at a sand trap where the heavy mineral substances sank to the bottom. A screening unit was then used to remove the chunky materials by hand out of the water.

Inflow chamber

The largest amount of sewage accrued on the right side of the Main and was sent to the plant through two large pipes below the Main. It was here that the sewage flowed into the plant.

Note:
Please note Java or QuickTime is being required in order to show the 360°-Panorama-Views. Usually Java is already part of the operating system of a modern PC. We recommend you to use QuickTime which is supplied as part of modern PCs too as it is cost-free and reaches the highest multi-medial efficiency.

The recommended screen resolution should be 1024x768. The transmission of data can be accelerated by using a hyper internet connection with DSL or dual-ISDN (clustered channels).

Additional information for the use of QuickTime or Java.

The interactive 360°-Panorama-Views are captures of moments taken from a permanent position. As a user you might take free views moving to all directions around this position. You only need to move the pointer of your mouse to the requested position within the 360°-Panorama-View while keeping the left button pressed.

Most of the 360°-Panorama-Views are featuring a kind of surround sound to give you the impression of being "right there in place". So, just turn on your sound system a little bit louder and enjoy impressive experiences while viewing.
